Long before Portland's famous International Rose Test Garden opened on the west side, this North Portland park was already growing roses. Peninsula Park's sunken rose garden dates to 1913, making it one of the oldest public rose gardens in the city, and it's a genuinely hidden gem compared to its more-visited counterpart across the river. Wander the geometric brick paths between beds of heirloom varieties, then cross the street for a look at the park's restored 1913 bandstand, still used for summer concerts. There's a full-size community pool, tennis and basketball courts, and shaded picnic tables if you want to make an afternoon of it. This is the kind of only-locals-know-about spot that rewards a slower visit: fewer crowds than the tourist-heavy gardens downtown, but just as much fragrant color from May through September.
