McKinney Falls sits entirely inside Austin's city limits, which makes it easy to forget it's a full Texas state park with real limestone waterfalls, wide swimming holes, and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails along Onion Creek. Upper and Lower Falls each have their own personality — the upper falls terrace down in wide limestone steps good for wading, while the lower falls drop into a deeper pool that's popular for a proper swim on hot days. Tucked into the trail system are the ruins of an 1850s gristmill and homestead built by Thomas McKinney, one of Stephen F. Austin's original colonists, giving the park a layer of Texas history most day-trippers walk right past on their way to the water.
