The 83rd Venice Film Festival runs Sept 2-12, 2026 on the Lido.
Every September, Venice trades its usual rhythm of vaporetti and gondolas for a starrier one: the world's oldest film festival takes over the Lido, and for eleven days the city becomes a stage for premieres, red carpets, and a very Italian mix of cinema and spectacle. This year, the 83rd Venice International Film Festival runs September 2-12, 2026, directed once again by Alberto Barbera, with the full program unfolding across the Lido di Venezia's historic venues.
Founded in 1932, the Venice Film Festival predates every other major festival on the international circuit, and it still carries that founding-father weight. The festival takes place on the Lido, the narrow barrier island a short vaporetto ride from St. Mark's Square, where the Palazzo del Cinema hosts screenings, press conferences, and nightly red-carpet arrivals each September.
The 2026 edition runs a full eleven days. Beyond the main competition (the Golden Lion is Venice's top prize), the festival runs parallel sections for debut directors, out-of-competition premieres, and a growing sidebar for series and long-form television.
Hotel prices on the Lido spike hard during these eleven days, so many travelers base themselves in central Venice instead, taking the vaporetto out to the Lido for screenings. Public film screenings are sometimes open to the general public -- check the official Biennale Cinema program before you go.
Even if you're not chasing red carpets, September is simply a superb time to be in Venice: the worst of the summer heat and cruise-ship crowds have thinned, and the light turns golden in the late afternoon.

The festival wraps September 12th, but Venice -- and the wheel -- are worth the trip any week of the year.
