Things to Do in Vancouver in the Rain (Fall Guide)

Rainy season in Vancouver? Spin our Vancouver wheel for indoor and rain-friendly ideas: Granville Island, Museum of Anthropology, Gastown, dim sum and more.

Locals have a name for it: the Wet Coast. From October onward, Vancouver swaps its blue summer skies for drizzle, mist on the North Shore mountains and the steady patter of rain on a café window. Visitors sometimes see that as a problem. Locals see it as the city's cosiest season.

The trick is to stop waiting for the weather to clear. Spin the wheel and let the rain become part of the plan.

Rain-Proof Spins

Our Vancouver, BC Things to Do wheel mixes indoor favourites with outdoor classics. Here's how each one works when the forecast says rain, which in fall it usually does.

Granville Island Public Market. The best rainy-day spin there is. Fresh pasta, smoked salmon, doughnuts and buskers, all under one roof. Take the little Aquabus across False Creek to get there.

Museum of Anthropology at UBC. Arthur Erickson's glass-and-concrete Great Hall frames towering Northwest Coast house posts and carvings, and grey skies make the space feel even more powerful. Budget at least two hours.

Gastown. Cobblestones, heritage brick and the famous steam clock, which whistles on the quarter hour. Duck between cafés, design shops and cocktail bars without ever getting properly soaked.

Dim sum in Richmond. Many people say Richmond's dim sum is the best outside Asia. A long, steamy lunch is the perfect answer to a wet Sunday. Take the Canada Line and get there early.

Stanley Park & the Seawall. Yes, outdoors, but hear us out. The park's old-growth rainforest is at its most atmospheric in the rain: moss glowing green, fog in the cedars. Bring a proper jacket and you'll have the trails nearly to yourself.

Capilano Suspension Bridge. Mist hanging in the canyon makes the crossing feel like something out of a fantasy novel. Check the hours, as winter's Canyon Lights season usually begins in late November.

Grouse Mountain. When it's raining in the city, it may be snowing up top. Ski season typically opens in late November or December, depending on snowfall.

Jericho Beach at sunset. For the rare clear evening. When the clouds break over English Bay after a week of rain, the whole city comes out.
