Things to Do in Whistler: Spin the Wheel & Discover Your Next Adventure

Whistler Blackcomb is consistently rated North America's best ski resort, and the mountain speaks for itself: 8,171 acres of skiable terrain, 200+ trails, 16 alpine bowls, and a vertical drop of 1,609 metres spread across two mountains connected by the jaw-dropping PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. The 2010 Winter Olympics chose this place for a reason. But Whistler's year-round personality is what makes it truly special — the summer mountain biking park is arguably as good as the skiing, the hiking trails are world-class, and the pedestrian village at the base is one of the liveliest in Canada regardless of season.

Whistler sits 120km north of Vancouver on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, one of the world's most dramatic roads, carving between steep granite cliffs and Howe Sound fjord. The drive alone is worth the trip. The village at Whistler's base is entirely pedestrian, which gives it a quality rare in resort towns — the absence of cars makes it genuinely pleasant to wander, eat, shop, and exist in without the constant noise and danger of traffic. Whistler works brilliantly as a base for both Garibaldi Provincial Park (day hike heaven) and the broader Sea-to-Sky corridor.

Top Things to Do in Whistler

Ski or Snowboard Whistler Blackcomb — The numbers are staggering: 8,171 acres, over 200 marked runs, 16 alpine bowls, three glaciers, and snow from November to May (sometimes later). The resort suits all levels — the groomed cruisers on Whistler's lower mountain are perfect for beginners and intermediates; the Blackcomb Glacier and Couloir Extreme are for experts only. Lift tickets are expensive; buy multi-day passes in advance for significant savings.

Ride the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola — When it opened in 2008, the PEAK 2 PEAK set three world records: longest unsupported span, longest continuous lift system, and highest lift of its kind. The 11-minute crossing between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains at 436 metres above the valley is spectacular even on cloudy days. Two gondola cabins have glass floors.

Mountain Bike the Whistler Bike Park — In summer, the ski lifts carry mountain bikers and their bikes to the top. The resulting network of 80+ trails ranging from beginner green runs to the legendary "A-Line" and "Top of the World" is the finest lift-accessed bike park in the world. Lessons are available for beginners; the park is open May to October.

Hike the High Note Trail — This 9.5km loop at 2,000+ metres elevation traverses the flank of Whistler Mountain with non-stop views of Black Tusk, the Pemberton Valley, and Garibaldi Lake. Access is via the gondola (ski pass or summer sightseeing ticket required). One of the finest day hikes in British Columbia.

Bear Watching with a Guide — From May through October, Whistler's black bear population is active and visible. Whistler Wildlife Adventures runs evening bear watching tours with expert naturalists who know the animals by name. Getting close to a foraging bear in the meadows at dusk, with mountains as backdrop, is genuinely extraordinary.

When to Visit Whistler

Winter ski season runs December through April (sometimes May on the glacier). Peak season is January and February for the best snow conditions; holiday weeks are extremely busy. The shoulder ski seasons — November/December and March/April — offer good snow at lower prices.

Summer (June–September) is surprisingly busy with mountain bikers, hikers, and festival-goers. The Whistler Village Beer Festival in September and Crankworx mountain biking festival in August are highlights. Summer accommodations are cheaper than peak ski season.

Getting There

Whistler is 2 hours north of Vancouver on Highway 99, the Sea-to-Sky Highway. Snowbus and Epic Rides offer shuttle services from Vancouver. The closest airport is Vancouver International; private helicopter transfers are available for an unforgettable arrival.
