Things to Do in Toronto: Spin the Wheel & Discover Your Next Adventure

Toronto is Canada's largest city and one of the most multicultural cities on earth — more than 200 languages are spoken here, and over half the population was born outside Canada. This extraordinary diversity shapes everything from the food scene (some of the finest dim sum, ramen, Ethiopian, and Jamaican food in North America) to the neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct identity and energy. The Distillery District's Victorian industrial architecture, Kensington Market's bohemian chaos, and Yorkville's polished boutiques could all be different cities.

The city sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and the waterfront — though historically industrial — is increasingly recreational, with trails, beaches, and the Toronto Islands ferry terminal drawing people south. Toronto's skyline is defined by the CN Tower, which pierced the clouds at 553 metres when it opened in 1976 and remained the world's tallest free-standing structure for 34 years. The city is genuinely alive year-round: summers bring outdoor festivals and waterfront life; winters bring skating rinks, acclaimed indoor markets, and a performing arts scene rivalling any in North America.

Top Things to Do in Toronto

Visit the CN Tower — The glass floor elevator at the CN Tower drops visitors to 342 metres above the city on a transparent floor. The observation deck above offers 360-degree views of the lake and city, and on a clear day you can see Niagara Falls. The EdgeWalk — where visitors walk around the outside of the tower's neck — is the city's ultimate thrill experience.

Explore the Distillery District — Toronto's most atmospheric neighbourhood is a 13-acre complex of Victorian industrial buildings that once housed the Gooderham and Worts Distillery. Today it holds galleries, restaurants, artisan studios, and the TIFF Bell Lightbox during film festival season. The Christmas Market here in December is the city's finest.

Walk the Toronto Islands — A 13-minute ferry from the bottom of Bay Street takes you to car-free islands with sandy beaches, kayak rentals, a children's amusement park, and the best view of the Toronto skyline anywhere. Ward's Island and Hanlan's Point are quieter; Centre Island is family-central with the famous swan boats.

Explore Kensington Market — This compressed neighbourhood west of downtown is where Toronto's bohemian soul lives. Vintage clothing shops crowd next to Jamaican bakeries, Portuguese fishmongers, and third-wave coffee bars. On warm weekends, the streets close to cars and it becomes one big pedestrian party.

Visit Casa Loma — Built between 1911 and 1914 by financier Sir Henry Pellatt, Casa Loma is a genuine Gothic Revival castle complete with secret passages, towers, and gardens. It's been used as a film location dozens of times and offers a surprisingly gripping audio tour of its extravagant and ultimately tragic history.

When to Visit Toronto

Summer (June–August) is peak season, with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September drawing global attention. Summers bring the Beaches Jazz Festival, Pride (the world's largest), and outdoor patios across the city. Winters are cold (average -4°C in January) but manageable, and the skating at Nathan Phillips Square and Harbourfront is genuinely wonderful.

Spring and fall are underrated — the crowds thin, hotel prices drop, and the city's neighbourhood energy is at its most authentic. Autumn foliage in the ravine system (Toronto has the largest urban ravine network in the world) is spectacular from mid-October.

Getting There

Toronto Pearson International Airport is one of North America's busiest, with direct flights from virtually everywhere. The Union Pearson Express train connects the airport to Union Station in 25 minutes. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport handles Porter Airlines flights to Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax, and several US cities — just a 5-minute ferry from the foot of Bathurst Street.
