Things to Do in Niagara Falls: Spin the Wheel & Discover Your Next Adventure

Niagara Falls is Canada's most visited tourist destination for good reason: the Horseshoe Falls are genuinely, overwhelmingly spectacular. Six million litres of water per second thunder over an 800-metre-wide crest into the Niagara Gorge, generating a perpetual mist cloud visible from 20km away. The Canadian side offers by far the best views — the Horseshoe Falls angle means you see the full curtain of water, unlike the partial view from New York State. The thunderous roar and the fine spray that drifts over the observation decks creates a sensory experience no photograph adequately prepares you for.

But Niagara Falls is more than the waterfall. The surrounding Niagara Peninsula is one of Canada's most acclaimed wine regions, producing world-famous ice wines and excellent Rieslings, Chardonnays, and Cabernet Francs. Niagara-on-the-Lake, just 20 minutes away, is a beautifully preserved 19th-century town with 30+ wineries along the wine route and the acclaimed Shaw Festival theatre. The region is genuinely worth two or three days — one day for the falls and its attractions, another for wine country, and perhaps a cycling day along the Niagara Parkway.

Top Things to Do in Niagara Falls

Take the Hornblower Niagara Cruise — This is the essential Niagara experience. The boat heads directly into the mist of the Horseshoe Falls, drenching everyone aboard in fine spray. Ponchos are provided but largely insufficient — go in and embrace getting soaked. The 20-minute tour runs from May to November; book online to avoid queues.

Walk Journey Behind the Falls — Tunnels cut through 635 million-year-old sedimentary rock lead to two portals directly behind the falling water. The volume of water passing through creates a roar and vibration you feel in your chest. Combined with Table Rock for the above-and-behind experience, it's the most immersive way to experience the falls.

Explore Niagara-on-the-Lake — This perfectly preserved loyalist town 20km north is one of Ontario's gems. The main street is lined with Victorian and Georgian buildings housing antique shops, wine boutiques, and acclaimed restaurants. The Shaw Festival presents world-class theatre from April to October. Book a winery tour at Inniskillin, the home of Canadian ice wine, just outside town.

Night Illumination Viewing — The falls are illuminated in rotating colours from dusk until midnight every night of the year. The Canadian side's Queen Victoria Park provides the best viewing position, and the combination of the coloured lights on the mist cloud and the sound of the falls in darkness is genuinely romantic and memorable.

Ride the Whirlpool Aero Car — Three kilometres downstream, the Niagara River churns into a massive whirlpool. The historic Spanish Aero Car — a cable car that has crossed the whirlpool since 1916 — provides a vertiginous ride directly over the boiling water. A genuine piece of engineering history and a great vantage point.

When to Visit Niagara Falls

The falls are open and spectacular year-round. Summer (June–August) is peak season with the longest days and all boat tours running. Winter has its own magic — the falls develop ice formations along the edges, and the Festival of Lights runs November through February. Spring and fall avoid the peak crowds while keeping all major attractions open.

For wine country, visit during the Niagara New Vintage Festival in June or the Icewine Festival in January — both excellent reasons to plan a trip around.

Getting There

Niagara Falls is 130km southwest of Toronto on the QEW highway — about 90 minutes by car. GO Transit buses run from Toronto's Union Station. The US border is literally the falls themselves — Niagara Falls, NY is a short walk across Rainbow Bridge.
