Things to Do in Kelowna: Spin the Wheel & Discover Your Next Adventure

Kelowna sits in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, a north-south rift valley carved by glaciers that left behind one of Canada's warmest and most productive agricultural regions. Okanagan Lake stretches 135km through the valley, providing a visual anchor for a city that has transformed from a fruit-growing town into Canada's most dynamic wine region combined with a genuine four-season resort destination. The valley produces over 80% of BC's wine and is home to more than 200 wineries, from boutique operations on rocky hillsides to destination estates with award-winning restaurants and dramatic architecture.

Kelowna itself is the Okanagan's largest city, with a population of around 150,000 that grows dramatically in summer when its beaches, wineries, and outdoor activities draw visitors from across Western Canada. The climate is genuinely remarkable by BC standards: Kelowna averages 2,000 hours of sunshine per year — more than any other city in British Columbia — with hot summers (regularly above 35°C in July) and cold but manageable winters with reliable ski conditions at Big White, 45 minutes away. The combination of wine, beach, cycling, hiking, and skiing in one valley makes Kelowna uniquely versatile as a destination.

Top Things to Do in Kelowna

Wine Tasting on the Okanagan Wine Route — The Okanagan wine region produces internationally acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and the valley's signature Rieslings. Mission Hill Family Estate — a dramatic winery with bell tower and cliff-edge amphitheatre — is the showpiece; Quails' Gate produces consistently excellent Pinot Noir; Cedar Creek has a beautiful lakeside tasting room. The Wine Route connects dozens of wineries along the valley floor and benchland roads above the lake.

Beach Day at Okanagan Lake — Kelowna's lakefront features several beaches, with City Park Beach and Boyce-Gyro Park the most popular in town. The lake reaches 24°C in July and August — warm by any standard, extraordinary by Canadian standards. Paddleboard and kayak rentals are available at several waterfront locations. The water is clear, the beaches are sandy, and the backdrop of the surrounding hills and vineyards is spectacular.

Cycle the KVR Trail — The Kettle Valley Railway trail is a converted rail line that winds through Kelowna's wine country on a gentle grade through vineyards, orchards, and hillside forest. The 16km section from Myra Canyon — with 18 historic trestle bridges — is the most spectacular stretch. Bike rental shops in town can arrange shuttle transport to the trailhead.

Pick Fruit at a U-Pick Farm — The Okanagan produces more cherries, peaches, apricots, and apples than any other region in Canada. From mid-June through October, dozens of U-pick farms along the Westside Road and Bennett Road let you harvest directly from the tree. Fresh-picked Okanagan cherries in July, eaten warm from the sun, are a transcendent experience.

Hike Knox Mountain — Rising directly above the north end of downtown Kelowna, Knox Mountain provides a challenging but rewarding 5.7km hike to summit views of Okanagan Lake, the city, and the valley stretching in both directions. The gentler Paul's Tomb Trail lower down is suitable for families.

When to Visit Kelowna

Summer (June–September) is peak season for wine, beach, and outdoor activities. July and August are the hottest months; temperatures above 35°C are common and the lake water reaches its warmest. Book accommodation well ahead for July.

Winter brings Big White Ski Resort into its season — consistent snow conditions, family-friendly terrain, and an ice skating village at the base. The drive from Kelowna (45 minutes) makes it accessible as a day trip or multi-day ski base.

Getting There

Kelowna International Airport connects to Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto with multiple daily flights on Air Canada, WestJet, and Flair. The drive from Vancouver is about 4 hours via the Coquihalla Highway — one of BC's most dramatic alpine highways. From Calgary, it's 7 hours through the Rockies via Highway 1.
