Things to Do in Jasper: Spin the Wheel & Discover Your Next Adventure

If Banff is the polished crown jewel of the Canadian Rockies, Jasper is the raw diamond. Canada's largest Rocky Mountain national park — 10,878 square kilometres compared to Banff's 6,641 — feels genuinely wilder and less trafficked, and the wildlife encounters here are extraordinary even by Rockies standards. The town of Jasper (population ~5,000) sits in the broad Athabasca Valley, surrounded by peaks that in some places rise nearly vertically from the valley floor. Elk wander through town. Black bears forage in the campgrounds. The Athabasca River, glacier-green and powerful, courses through the valley floor.

Jasper is also the world's second-largest dark sky preserve, encompassing 11,000 square kilometres with almost no light pollution. On a clear night, the Milky Way is not just visible but overwhelming — a thick band of stars so bright it casts shadows. The annual Dark Sky Festival in October draws astronomers and stargazers from across the planet. Jasper works beautifully as a destination in its own right or as the northern end of the legendary Icefields Parkway drive from Banff — one of the world's great road journeys.

Top Things to Do in Jasper

See the Athabasca Glacier — The Columbia Icefield covers 325 square kilometres and feeds eight major glaciers, including the Athabasca. You can walk to the toe of the glacier from the Icefield Centre on the Icefields Parkway, or take an Ice Explorer tour onto the glacier surface itself. Parks Canada's interpretive displays document the glacier's dramatic retreat — it has receded over 1.5km since 1844, a sobering visual record of climate change.

Cruise Maligne Lake to Spirit Island — Maligne Lake is the largest naturally formed lake in the Canadian Rockies. A 45-minute boat tour leads to Spirit Island — a tiny island of conifers against a backdrop of glacier-draped peaks that has been photographed so many times it's become one of Canada's most recognizable images. The island is accessible only by boat; tours run from June through October.

Soak in Miette Hot Springs — At 54°C at the source (cooled to a more comfortable 40°C for the pools), Miette is the hottest natural mineral springs in the Canadian Rockies. The facility sits in a narrow valley 60km east of Jasper, surrounded by rugged peaks. The drive alone — through wildlife-rich Fiddle River valley — is worth the trip.

Dark Sky Stargazing — Jasper's designation as a dark sky preserve means light pollution is actively managed across the entire park. The annual Dark Sky Festival in October features telescope viewing, expert talks, and Indigenous sky knowledge sessions. But any clear night from May through October offers extraordinary stargazing from campgrounds, pullouts along the Icefields Parkway, or the shores of Lake Edith just outside town.

Spot Wildlife on Maligne Lake Road — The 48km road from Jasper to Maligne Lake is one of the most productive wildlife corridors in the Rockies. Elk are virtually guaranteed; black bears, wolves, moose, and bighorn sheep are commonly seen, especially at dawn and dusk. Drive slowly with windows open and scan the forest edges.

When to Visit Jasper

Summer (June–September) is prime season, with all facilities open, hiking trails snow-free, and wildlife maximally active. Maligne Lake boat tours, gondola, and hot springs all operate. Book accommodation well ahead — the town is genuinely popular despite being 370km from Calgary.

Winter brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and extraordinary quiet. The Icefields Parkway is plowed but conditions can be challenging; check road reports. The stargazing is unparalleled in winter on clear nights. Spring (April–May) sees the return of migratory birds and peak wildlife activity as animals emerge from lower elevations.

Getting There

Jasper is 370km west of Edmonton (3.5 hours) and 289km north of Banff (2.5 hours on the Icefields Parkway, or 4.5 hours via the Trans-Canada). VIA Rail's Canadian transcontinental train stops at Jasper station, connecting to Vancouver and Toronto. The Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper is one of the world's most spectacular drives — allow a full day to do it justice.
