Things to Do in Fredericton: Spin the Wheel & Discover Your Next Adventure

Fredericton is one of Canada's most underrated provincial capitals — a small, elegant river city of 60,000 that punches considerably above its weight in arts, culture, and outdoor recreation. The city sits on the broad floodplain of the Saint John River in central New Brunswick, with a historic downtown that retains the character of its 18th-century British garrison origins while supporting a lively university town energy from the University of New Brunswick (founded 1785 — the oldest English-language university in Canada) and St. Thomas University.

The Historic Garrison District along the waterfront is the city's cultural heart: a collection of restored military buildings that in summer fill with costumed interpreters, officers' quarters converted to galleries, and the daily Guard Mount ceremony that has been performed here since the 1780s. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery — built on the banks of the Saint John River and endowed by press baron Lord Beaverbrook with a stunning collection of British and Canadian art — is one of Atlantic Canada's cultural treasures. And the Saturday farmers' market, operating since 1790, is genuinely one of the finest in Canada and a window into New Brunswick's agricultural and artisanal richness.

Top Things to Do in Fredericton

Walk the Historic Garrison District — The Officers' Square and surrounding historic military buildings form the centrepiece of Fredericton's waterfront. In summer, the New Brunswick Regiment performs the Guard Mount ceremony each morning in period uniform — a tradition continuous since the garrison was established. The Guard House (1784), the Officers' Barracks, and the former Soldiers' Barracks (now an arts centre) together form one of the best-preserved 18th-century garrison complexes in Canada.

Visit the Beaverbrook Art Gallery — Lord Beaverbrook (born Max Aitken in Maple, Ontario, and raised in New Brunswick) donated his remarkable art collection to New Brunswick in 1959, including Salvador Dalí's giant Mural of the Apotheosis of Homer, Thomas Gainsborough portraits, and the finest collection of Cornelius Krieghoff paintings outside a national gallery. The gallery's permanent collection is a genuine surprise for a city of Fredericton's size.

The Boyce Farmers' Market — Operating since 1790 under various arrangements, the Boyce Farmers' Market on George Street has been in its current form for decades. Every Saturday morning, local farmers, artisans, bakers, and prepared food vendors fill the market building. New Brunswick honey, maple syrup, fiddlehead greens (a local spring delicacy), and fresh-baked Acadian bread are among the highlights.

Day Trip to Fundy Trail Parkway — An hour's drive south of Fredericton, the Fundy Trail Parkway preserves 17km of undeveloped Bay of Fundy coastline. The main trail follows the clifftops with extraordinary views of the highest tides in the world. A suspension bridge crosses Big Salmon River at a spectacular coastal gorge. This is New Brunswick outdoor recreation at its finest.

Kayak Mactaquac Lake — The Mactaquac Dam, 24km upstream from Fredericton, created a vast reservoir that extends 100km up the Saint John River valley. The calm water, wooded shores, and absence of powerboat traffic on most of the lake make it excellent for kayaking and canoeing. Several campgrounds and outfitters serve the Mactaquac area.

When to Visit Fredericton

Summer (July–August) brings the best weather (average 26°C in July), the Garrison District in full operation, and free outdoor concerts at Officers' Square. The New Brunswick Highland Games and the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in September are excellent reasons to time a visit to late summer/early fall.

Winter is cold (-10°C average in January) but the city handles it well — skating on Officers' Square and cross-country skiing in Odell Park are winter highlights.

Getting There

Fredericton Airport is 15km southeast of downtown, served by Air Canada connecting to Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, and Toronto. The Trans-Canada highway connects Fredericton to Moncton (2 hours), Halifax (3 hours), and Quebec City (5 hours). The Saint John-Fredericton highway is 1.5 hours.
