The 191st Oktoberfest runs Sept 19 - Oct 4, 2026 in Munich.
It's the festival that gave its name to hundreds of imitators worldwide, and the original is still, by a wide margin, the biggest party of its kind on Earth. The 191st Oktoberfest runs September 19 through October 4, 2026, filling Munich's Theresienwiese grounds for sixteen days with beer tents, brass bands, and roughly six million visitors passing through the gates.
Oktoberfest dates back to 1810, when Munich threw a public celebration for the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig. The festival opens with a mayor's ceremonial keg tap -- "O'zapft is!" -- and the first stein is poured within minutes.
The grounds hold more than a dozen large tents, each run by a different Munich brewery, plus dozens of smaller ones. Beyond the beer, Oktoberfest is genuinely a folk festival -- traditional Bavarian dress fills the grounds, a parade of costumes and riflemen's associations opens the festival, and carnival rides run alongside the tents.
Reserve tent tables well in advance if you want a guaranteed seat during peak hours. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are dramatically less crowded than weekend evenings. And pace yourself: the Maß (one-liter stein) is the standard pour, and the festival runs sixteen days.
