Once a year, Barcelona stops being a city you visit and becomes a city having a party, and everyone's invited. La Mercè, the city's biggest annual festival, returns September 23-27, 2026, with September 24th as the main day and an official public holiday across the city -- the streets, squares, and beaches of all ten districts given over to five days of fire, towers, and fireworks.
La Mercè honors Barcelona's patron saint, but the religious roots have grown into one of the largest free street festivals in Europe. The Correfoc ("fire run") sends costumed devils and dragons through the streets showering sparks over the crowd. The Castellers build human towers -- sometimes eight or nine people high, topped by a small child who scrambles up once the tower is complete. The festival's Gegants (Giants) Parade sends towering painted figures processing through the old town to drumbeats and pipes.
The 2026 edition features more than 500 events spread across all ten of Barcelona's districts, extending this year to Parc de les Glòries and Bogatell beach for the first time. The festival closes with the Piromusical, a synchronized fireworks-and-music finale along the waterfront.
Because September 24th is a public holiday, expect many shops to close for the day itself, while the streets more than make up for it with free performances and food stalls. Arrive early for the Correfoc and Castellers if you want a clear sightline -- both draw dense crowds in the historic center.
